A: Yes. you do need an employer identification number in order to file Form 2290. Previously, social security numbers could be used, but the IRS stopped accepting social security numbers for this purpose in 2011. If you do not already have an EIN, you may apply for one free at www.irs.gov/businesses/small or by phone at 1-800-829-4933.
